معتمد مذهب الإمام أحمد أنه إذا اتفق وقت عقيقة وأضحية: أجزأت إحداهما عن الأخرى؛ كما لو اتفق يوم عيد وجمعة فاغتسل لأحدهما، نصَّ عليه البهوتي وغيره، وهو مذهب الأحناف.
والرواية الأخرى أنها لا تُجزئ؛ لأن العقيقة مقصودة لذاتها والأضحية مقصودة لذاتها، فلا تجزئ إحداهما عن الأخرى، وهو مذهب المالكية والشافعية.
والقول الأول قال به الحسن البصري وابن سيرين وغيرهما، ونصره الشيخ محمد بن إبراهيم رحمه الله تعالى.
فقد أخرج ابن أبي شيبة في مصنفه (٢٥٨٤٨) عن الحسن البصري قال: «إذا ضحوا عن الغلام فقد أجزأت عنه من العقيقة».
وأخرج في المصنف أيضًا (٢٥٨٤٩) عن الحسن البصري وابن سيرين قالا: «يجزئ عنه العقيقة من الأضحية».
